Competency Based Interviews
Competency based interviews focus on 'core' skills and behaviors that constitute success within a given
role. The interviewer looks for specific evidence that exemplifies such competencies. It is standard
practice for a score to be allocated for each competency, with a total being used as a measure of objectivity
General Tips
- Don’t give general examples – be specific
- Recall as much details as possible in your answers
- Be concise (do not waffle)
- Stick to areas of experience that you are confident with (this will come across in your tone)
- It is important to have examples of when you could not do something (and why) alongside examples of success
Main Competencies Assessed & Example question
- Sales ability/persuasiveness
- Provide an example of when you have sold an idea
- Can you describe your sales approach
- Describe a time when you could not persuade someone
- Drive for Results
- When have you had to work past a deadline
- When have you had to overcome objection
- What drives you
- Planning and Organisation
- How do you manage your time
- How would you work to a tight deadline
- How do you monitor the progress of your tasks
- Teamwork
- Tell me about a time you have worked within a team to achieve an outcome
- Describe a time when a colleague or friend has annoyed you
- When have you had to alter your approach with someone to ensure success within the team
