Those working in medical sales are responsible for selling medical products to healthcare professionals. Like other sales teams working in Life Science companies, they are assigned specific areas to sell in. More senior sales roles may be assigned territories across the UK, Europe and further afield. Medical sales reps must establish relationships not just with new customers such as consultants but also with stakeholder groups.

Medical sales roles start from a Trainee Sales Representative and eventually lead up to senior roles such as National Sales Manager and Sales Director. Gaining experience at a sales representative level may lead candidates onto positions such as Territory Manager and Account Manager. There are a wide variety of companies to potentially work for, including multinationals, start-ups and companies spun out of universities.

Key duties for sales staff include finding new leads in their territory (including cold calling hospitals and GP surgeries), arranging and delivering sales presentations, keeping abreast of new developments in your company’s field(s) and any changes in regulations that might impact business. Sales reps will often meet with Area Managers to discuss targets and contacts made; helping to revise targets if necessary.

Travelling is a major aspect of sales roles. Representatives, Area Managers and other staff often travel across territories to meet clients and develop new leads. Depending on the role, there may also be travel further afield. A company car may be given to successful candidates.

A degree in the Life Sciences or a related area is essential for candidates looking to work in medical sales. Employers often have graduate sales schemes, so experience may not always be necessary. A driving licence is essential for sales positions. Medical sales knowledge is beneficial. Salaries vary according to experience and qualifications. Candidates will often earn a commission on sales made and this will vary from position to position.
